Alarm monitoring non-renewal letter
Stop an alarm or security monitoring agreement from renewing, and agree when monitoring ends so the premises aren’t left unprotected.
Before you send it
- Know who you contract with. The monitoring company is sometimes different from the dealer that installed the system, and the equipment may be owned, leased or financed. The agreement says which, and who gets notice.
- Plan the changeover. If you are switching providers, arrange for the new one to start before the old one stops. Check whether your insurance policy or your lease requires a monitored alarm.
- Update your alarm permit. Some cities and counties require a registered alarm permit that names the monitoring company. Update it when you switch.
- Change your codes. Once monitoring ends, change passcodes and remove remote access the old provider had.
- Keep proof. Send the letter the way the agreement requires; find the date with the notice deadline calculator.

Re: Notice of Non-Renewal of Alarm Monitoring Agreement
To whom it may concern:
This letter is written notice that [Your company] does not intend to renew the above-referenced agreement with [Monitoring company] (the “Agreement”).
The Agreement requires not less than [notice period] written notice prior to the end of the current term. This notice is given on [Date], in advance of the [End of current term] expiration, and is intended to satisfy that requirement.
Accordingly, the Agreement will expire by its terms on [End of current term] and will not renew.
Please confirm in writing the date and time monitoring of the premises will end, which should be no earlier than the end of the term on [End of current term].
Please tell us whether you consider any equipment at the premises to be your property and, if so, your arrangements for its removal.
Once monitoring ends, please remove our emergency contacts and passcodes from your records.
Please send a final invoice for any amounts you consider due through the end of the term.
Please acknowledge receipt of this notice.
Sincerely,

Common questions
How do I cancel an alarm monitoring contract?
Give written notice of non-renewal by the deadline in the agreement, sent the way its notice clause requires, and confirm the date monitoring will end. Ending before the term is up depends on what the agreement allows.
What happens to the alarm equipment when I cancel?
It depends on the agreement. Equipment may belong to you, or the company may keep ownership and have the right to remove it. The letter asks them to say which, so you can plan.
When do I have to send a non-renewal letter?
By the notice deadline in your contract, which is usually a set number of days or months before the current term ends. Use the free notice deadline calculator to find the date, and allow time for delivery if the contract counts notice from when it is received.
How should I send it?
The way your contract’s notice clause requires. Many require certified mail, overnight courier or hand delivery, and some do not accept email. Keep the receipt or tracking record as proof of when the notice went out and when it arrived.
What if they don’t acknowledge the letter?
Follow up in writing and keep a copy. A missing acknowledgment does not by itself make your notice ineffective, but proof of delivery matters if the other side later says it never arrived.
